The expiration date was built into our previous agreement, and we worked with Anthem since the spring to renew the contract before it expired. Unfortunately, Anthem refused to commit to an agreement that protects our patients’ access to in-network care. We are deeply disappointed that Anthem did not address the issues we raised throughout the negotiation process, which resulted in Mount Sinai going out of network.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which insurance plans are affected by the contract expiration?
This impacts all Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield plans, including employer-sponsored plans and all out-of-state Blue Cross Blue Shield plans.
Will emergency care still be covered in network?
Yes. By law, insurance companies must cover emergency services at in-network rates, regardless of network status. You can always receive emergency care in Mount Sinai’s emergency departments.
Where can I find more information?
Call one of Mount Sinai’s dedicated community information lines:
- Anthem Commercial patients: 833-912-3558
- Anthem Medicaid and Essential Plan patients: 833-912-5604
What can I do to protect my access to in-network care at Mount Sinai?
You have a number of options:
- Call Anthem at the number on the back of your insurance card and ask them to restore in-network access to Mount Sinai providers and services.
- If you receive your Anthem insurance through your employer, talk to your Human Resources or Benefits Department and ask them to advocate with Anthem on your behalf.
- Go to keepmountsinai.org/accepted-insurance-plans to view other insurance plans Mount Sinai participates with.
Will my out-of-pocket cost increase if Mount Sinai’s contract with Anthem expires?
Because Anthem no longer considers Mount Sinai in network, Anthem determines what portion of your care they will cover and what portion you may be required to pay out of pocket. In many cases, Anthem may cover a smaller portion of the cost for out-of-network care.
If you have procedures or surgeries scheduled, we recommend contacting Anthem directly using the number on the back of your insurance card to understand your potential out-of-pocket costs.
Please remember that emergency services must be covered at in-network rates under federal law, regardless of network status.
Does this negotiation impact out-of-state Blue Cross Blue Shield plans?
Yes. This affects all Blue Cross Blue Shield plans, including out-of-state plans offered through employers. The only exception is Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield New Jersey plans, which will keep in-network access to Mount Sinai physicians and hospitals.
How do I know if I have a condition that is eligible for continuity of care?
If you are currently receiving care from certain Mount Sinai-affiliated specialty providers or using the specific specialty services, your health plan may be required to continue covering your care at in-network rates for a limited period of time under continuity-of-care protections.
Determinations regarding eligibility and approval for continuity of care are ultimately up to your insurer. Unfortunately, Mount Sinai physician practices do not have access to or influence over these determinations and cannot provide additional information about individual cases.
If you believe you may be eligible for continuity of care, please contact your insurer directly at the number on the back of your insurance card.
I am a Con Edison employee and have a condition that requires ongoing care. What are my options?
You may qualify for transition-of-care coverage. We encourage you to contact Anthem at the number on the back of your insurance card to find out how you can apply for the benefit.
